Will write for food
So, here's the deal - I want to become a writer. Not because I want to become rich and famous, but because I love to write. I've been watching a Showtime program called Californication. It's not for the faint of heart, but I love David Duchovny, and he is amazing as Hank Moody in the show. Hank is a writer, and watching the show has stirred my heart in some profound ways. It has reminded me how much I love to write, and challenged me to find ways to pursue a path my heart longs for.
This means a couple of things.
First, it means I am leaving Northern Kentucky University and Brown Mackie College. For those who don't know, in addition to my full-time position at UC, I have taught part-time at NKU and Brown Mackie for the past three years. The money has been great, but I am getting burnt out and I don't technically need the extra money, so I'm going to take a leap of faith and leave both jobs this Spring.
Second, I do sorta need more money than I make at UC, and I have always wanted to write professionally, so I figured now was a good time to take a risk. Because leaving NKU and BM will free up about 20 hours per week, I'll have some spare time. I want to devote part of that time to writing short stories, a novel, a non-fiction book, and maybe even a television show (a Fuller-Murphy Production?). But I'll also need to devote part of that time to writing for profit.
So, I am officially announcing my new profession as a freelance writer. I've been researching the business for a while now, and I know the challenges involved, but it's something I feel like I need to do. I already have a couple gigs lined up, so we'll see what happens.
So, if you want me to write your book report, drop me a line. If you know of any professional freelance opportunities, don't be shy about throwing them my way. And Sean, if you need a day off from blogging, I'm your man for only ten cents per word.
"They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? 'Carpe...' Hear it? 'Carpe... carpe diem.' Seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary."

I've got the first draft of
"Grads" somewhere here in the files...just waiting your signature.
And any time you want to guest blog - I'm willing to work out a per word deal, as long as you're not just throwing in random quotes from old movies to up the price...
Will you write my papers when I start school? Do I get a discount or maybe you could even say it is your practice test?
Keep becoming famous so when we do finish "Grads," studios will be knocking down our door for the rights.
5 cents per word for family.
You're not going to start charging a subscription fee for your blog, are you?
Congratulations on such a major life decision. Your friend Ryan gave me the link to your news because I've been freelancing fulltime for two years now.
God has blessed my business and I'm grateful to have a job I love so much and He's keeping me plenty busy for now.
Freelance commercial writing is definitely something for you to sink your chops into so check out "The Well-Fed Writer" by Peter Bowerman. Follow the simple advice, get clients, write, earn a living. It's good stuff.
And, hey, I left my job 2 years ago without a gig so you're a couple up on me. Enjoy the life (there are challenges as well as rewards)!
Jan,
Thanks for the advice...very much appreciated!
Mike,
With the amount of amazing insight I provide, it's almost a crime not to charge a subscription fee!
steve - agreed. I wonder if perhaps the fact that you don't charge a subscription fee causes people to under-value what you are offering, here.
Sometimes, to get people to really understand just how good a product really is, you have to make them pay for it.
That's why I make women pay to go on dates with me.
mike, do you charge for dudes?
if not, i'm game.
